Meaning that the authors enters into their souls with equal depth, affection and understanding. The book is also beautilly written and quite touching: the story of a young man, Niels Lyhne, from birth to early death--apparently autobiographical but in fact not. Its appeal is universal. Also, this is one of the books Rainer Maria Rilke said he reread with increasing pleasure many times over.
